A Fresh Charisma to Doomsday and Other Links

by Alex Carnevale

Michael Chabon on Obama makes all good men who want to come to the aid of their party want to barf.

This is close to the dumbest thing ever written:

The point of Obama’s candidacy is that the damaged state of American democracy is not the fault of George W. Bush and his minions, the corporate-controlled media, the insurance industry, the oil industry, lobbyists, terrorists, illegal immigrants or Satan. The point is that this mess is our fault. We let in the serpents and liars, we exchanged shining ideals for a handful of nails and some two-by-fours, and we did it by resorting to the simplest, deepest-seated and readiest method we possess as human beings for trying to make sense of the world: through our fear. America has become a phobocracy.

The idea that Obama is anti-Israel (he is not) is particularly important to tear down according to these people, because they are mostly Jews who are left-wingers except when it comes to Israel:

Fear and those who fatten on it spread vile lies about Obama’s religion, his past drug use, his views on Israel and the Jews. Fear makes us see the world purely in terms of enemies and perils, and leads us to seek out the promise of leadership, however spurious it proves to be, among those who speak the language of that doomed and demeaning, that inhuman view of the world.

I’m not going to get on Chabon for being a bandwagon person, but where exactly were all these people before Iowa?

i would also never diss oprah, like james frey is doing

In other news:

Watched the end of the debate, how Barack stood up and waited there while Hillary readied herself to stand…ready to pull out her chair (which he did).

Wondering if his good manners were caught by any others, and wondering whether the fickle Dem female vote (you know, the ones who voted with Hillary because he said something mean in New Hampshire) will now sway back to him.

De Niro on Obama:

Robert DeNiro took down the house a minute ago at the Obama rally I’m attending at the Meadowlands. He announced that “Barack Obama isn’t experienced enough to be president.” As he ran down a litany that included his opposition to the war in Iraq, DeNiro said: “The kind of inexperience I can get use to. That’s the kind of inexperience our country deserves. If our next president were based on the quantity of experience, Dick Cheney would be president.”

Well… let’s just say the arena didn’t break out in Cheney 2008 … I don’t think I’m the target audience.

Danish on the Vampire Weekend concert:

I thought the buzz was going to be justified but that was tremendously underwhelming show. Totally unfair to compare them to the strokes who actually made a lot of awesome songs.

Vampire Weekend on Very Short List made me sad. All they do is take the top story on Digg these days. I’m going to unsubscribe.
